Environmental and Resource Economics - Studies in Kiel
Description of the study
How should we manage limited natural resources and the environment in order to operate sustainably and ensure prosperity for future generations? You will address this and other key questions about the future in the English-language master's program “Environmental and Resource Economics” at Kiel University. Your studies will focus on natural resources such as oil and fish stocks, as well as environmental issues such as climate protection and biodiversity conservation. You will learn to evaluate these topics from an economic perspective, manage environmental resources efficiently, and shape environmental and climate policy.
Our program provides in-depth knowledge in the fields of environmental economics, resource economics, energy economics, microeconomics, and economic growth theory. A particular focus is placed on quantitative methods, which will prepare you optimally for the competitive job market. These methods include econometrics and numerical modeling with common software such as R or STATA. You will not only acquire in-depth knowledge in the application of analytical tools, but also learn to develop and work on research questions independently—including in project-related elective modules and seminars. Great importance is attached to the connection between theory and practice.
The standard period of study is four semesters. You should apply if you enjoy dealing with issues related to the environment and resource use, and if you have a bachelor's degree in economics with a focus on macroeconomics and solid English language skills. Applications with degrees in related fields and relevant experience in economics (especially microeconomics and macroeconomics) are expressly welcome.
The Faculty of Economics and Social Sciences at Kiel University cooperates closely with the renowned Kiel Institute for the World Economy, giving you access to current research projects and international networks beyond the faculty. As a graduate, you will be well prepared for positions in companies related to environmental or resource use, in international organizations, ministries, environmental associations, consulting firms, and in research. Thanks to your methodological and thematic expertise, you will be the person your future employer turns to for solutions for sustainable business practices.
