Shipbuilding and Maritime Engineering - Studies in Kiel

Hochschule: Kiel University of Applied Sciences
Abteilung/Fakultät: Mechanical Engineering - Institute of Naval Architecture and Maritime Engineering
Standort: Kiel
Abschluss: Bachelor
Studienbeginn: Wintersemester

Beschreibung des Studiums

The bachelor's degree program in Shipbuilding and Maritime Technology at Kiel University of Applied Sciences provides a solid engineering education with a strong practical focus over seven semesters. The program concludes with a Bachelor of Engineering (B.Eng.) degree and is aimed at prospective students who are enthusiastic about technology, marine engineering, and modern ship development. The program starts in the winter semester and has no admission restrictions. A twelve-week pre-study internship must be completed by the fourth semester.

The program focuses on key areas such as ship design, construction, strength of materials, fluid mechanics, stability, and equipment technology. In addition, students acquire in-depth knowledge of modern computer-aided methods such as CFD (computational fluid dynamics) for flow simulation and FEM (finite element method) for strength analysis. Topics such as operational strength, yacht design, lightweight construction, energy efficiency, and innovative materials complement the broad range of subjects. Practical orientation is a top priority: in addition to laboratory exercises, project work, and close cooperation with companies, excursions to shipyards and research institutions are also part of everyday student life. In the seventh semester, students carry out a comprehensive industrial project and complete their studies with a practical bachelor's thesis.

The program offers the best prerequisites for a career in the maritime industry, at classification societies, supplier companies, or in research. A subsequent master's degree – for example, “Shipbuilding and Maritime Technology” at Kiel University of Applied Sciences – is also seamlessly possible. Graduates are sought-after specialists in an industry that is facing profound technological changes in the face of climate change, digitalization, and global trade.
